Who is the Green Man?

More than just a spirit of the forest, the Green Man symbolises regeneration, rebirth and guardianship of the land.

The Green Man is one of the most sculpted and interpreted symbols - seen on many old and new churches in the form of a gargoyle head with leaves growing from his mouth and hair. His image originates far back in time and reappears constantly through the ages.

His association with many different archetypes and has had several names: Silanus (the Roman God of the woods), Dionysos (Bacchus) and Le Fsuilli (the Leaf Man).
Also some of the ancient Celtic Gods are associated with the Green Man: Cernunnos and Herne (of Robin Hood tales).

Historically the popularity of the green Man coincides with periods when Man's bond with nature is particularly strong or weak.
